Solo Art Exhibition Georgia Michaelides Saad, ‘MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM’

Solo Art Exhibition Georgia Michaelides Saad, ‘MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM’ – 12th of May 2022 – 28th of May 2022-, at Exhibit 8 Gallery

The opening event of the Exhibition ‘MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM’ will be on Thursday, the 12th of May at 19:30 at Exhibit 8. The opening speech will be held by Mr. Loukas Christodoulides, president of the non-profitable organization International Action Art of Cyprus. The exhibition will be on until the 28th of May 2022.

Georgia Michaelides Saad was born in Limassol. She moved for many years in South Africa and she returned back to Cyprus in 1996, where she lives since then. The artist has obtained her degree and diploma in arts and education at the universities of South Africa. In 1994, she was awarded Robin Aldwinckle Merit Bursary at the University of South Africa. She continued her studies at the Cyprus University of Technology, where she obtained a Master degree on History and Theory of Art.

Georgia Michaelides Saad worked as an art teacher both in South Africa and in Cyprus. Artworks of hers are found in public and private collections in Cyprus such as at the Ministry of Education and Culture, as well as at the Public Galleries of Limassol and Nicosia. Furthermore, some of the artist’s artworks are in private collections in South Africa, England, France, Ireland, Germany and Russia.

The artist had many solo exhibitions and she participated in many group exhibitions in Cyprus, France, China and South Africa. In 2017, she participated in Beijing’s Biennale with her artwork Iris Bostrensis, Silk Road. The artwork was selected to be part of the ‘National Art Museum of China’ collection.

Artists statement

Through her solo exhibition, Georgia Michaelides Saad aims to explore the natural forms; the flowers in particular.  According to the artist, the flowers are a representation of the microcosm in relation to the macrocosm, the finite as expressive of the infinite. Flowers have also been associated with a long-standing tradition which connects them to female sexuality as many of them resemble in form the female genitalia. This association has been given to her flowers as well.  Although, through her artworks she illustrates flowers with great detail and through an enlarged view point of them. Through this method, the artist aims to transmit the feeling of awe and mystery, which she has experienced before, even from the minutest forms of nature.

‘Deformation’ Group Art Exhibition – 8th of April – 7th of May – Exhibit 8 Gallery

Exhibit 8 Gallery is organizing the ‘Deformation’ Group of Art Exhibition.

When there is a form; there is its deformation too. Deformation is part of our everyday, of our existence and our progress. The form or the deformation of a face, of a landscape, of an object are found as a two-dimensional and/or a three-dimensional aspect and shape.
However, what about the substance and the identity of the deformed material? Is it lost? Does it change? Or is it a stable value?

The opening speech was held by Municipal Councillor Kristis Demetriou, chairman of the Committee on Development, Tourism and Merchant Shipping.

Participant Artists:
Nata Chebarkova, Irene Fani Efstathiou, Vartan Ghazarian, Stavri Iacovou, Soteris Ioannides, Margo Isentaeva, Chrysa Kanari, Vasos Karayiannis, M. ‘Möbius spaces’ | Opening event of the Solo Exhibition by Xristos Panagiotou

Christos Panagiotou is an artist and researcher at the Lab for Animation Research (LAR), at the Department of Fine Arts, Cyprus University of Technology. He is a Ph.D. in Communication. His interests revolve around the notion of space as a Topological entity and how its structure is related to discourse and narratives. He examines the Möbius structure as a topological manifestation of psychological and political discourses and narratives.
About the exhibition:
Modernity is associated with quantification, measurement, structures, and, ultimately, a simulated, linear, and delimited edifice of the temporal and the spatial dimension. Clocks through machinery record time in sequential units of moments: milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, centuries. Space is also divided into linear, delimited, measurable units. Consumerism: machines manufacture units of products that we buy in units with units of value (price) to separate ourselves, to be “unique.” Modernity is a colossal machine ruled by an ordered quantity of units situated in space and time, a numerical plane of existence. No wonder statistics – and Google – is the new God. When we quantify the spatial and temporal dimensions, we restructure them as linear entities; Reality becomes the sum of dissociated temporal and spatial units bound together through a rigid scaffold set by machinery.
Once we delineate space and time, the concept of limits also arises. Limits separate entities and delineate units; limits justify where the Self starts and when it ends when the Other begins and where the Other stops. A linear perception of the Self also occurs in the temporal dimension. Limits separate who I am, who I am not, and whom I want to be in a linear temporal progression. Limits that quantify and justify the notion of property, and limits that demarcate whole nations – boundaries – the Self and the Other, limits of time – timetables, schedules – and Identities about who we are in time and space are formed, because after all, in Modernity, there are clean-cut temporal and spatial limits that separate in units the Self from the Other.
In this photography exhibition, I use the topological properties of the Möbius strip to restructure space within photographs non-linearly, thus subverting the notion of spatial linearity within the photographic image. Möbius strip has no orientation and no limits, no borders. I also refer to the aesthetics of M.C. Escher and Arnold Böcklin.
** The exhibition is based on my research about “space and time in artificial environments,” done in the context of my work as a researcher in the Lab for Animation Research
* The Exhibition will be until the 5th of February.
